James Patten

bio

James Patten is an interaction designer, inventor and visual artist whose practice explores the convergence of interactive media and the built environment – creating experiences that bridge the physical and digital – melding tangibility, materiality, and technology to expand the vocabulary of design. Using computation like any other design material, the work of Patten Studio introduces new narratives for how we perceive interactive technology and engage with each other in the built environment. 

Patten’s work has been exhibited or performed in venues such the Museum of Modern Art, the Transmediale festival in Berlin, the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao and the Ars Electronica Center in Linz, Austria and recognized in several international design competitions.He is a TED Senior Fellow and Speaker and earned his doctorate at the MIT Media Lab where he studied in the Tangible Media Group under Hiroshi Ishii. Prior to the Media Lab, Patten worked on the Alice project, one of the first virtual reality systems for personal computers, with Randy Pausch at the University of Virginia, and developed new data visualization systems at NASA Langley Research Center.
